My Hawaii Villa-Rental Adventures

You may have read my advice for renting a villa on Hawaii's Big Island in this month’s issue of Conde Nast Traveler, but have you seen the video of how I learned to hula? My family and I also got a private ukelele concert under the palms from a renowned local kahu (keeper of the culture), and we even scuba-dived at night with manta rays the size of king-sized mattresses. The only thing on our trip that my videographer husband failed to document was my first attempt at surfing—thank God, since I looked even spazzier than in the hula lesson.

At any rate, my villa-rental feature in our June issue delves into the pros and cons of renting a home vs. staying in a hotel, and it includes essential tips for how to get the best deal on a rental and how to determine whether a villa vacation is right for you in the first place. If you're in need of a superlative rental agent—such as Anne Pawsat-Dressler of Hawaii Hideaways, who booked my villa trip and organized all those fun Big Island activities we filmed—you can find one using our new Find Your Perfect Travel Agent tool. And if you've got questions about renting in Hawaii, be sure to ask them here.

Love the video and the fabulous advice!

We will be heading to Hawaii this year as we circumvent the globe on our open ended family world tour, so the timing is perfect!
