October 2009 Archives

This may be the low-season business-class airfare sale to Europe that Conde Nast Traveler readers have been waiting for: $1,698 roundtrip to Dublin or Shannon from New York (JFK), Boston, or Chicago. That fare includes a free roundtrip coach flight from Dublin to 21 cities throughout Europe.

Frequent-Flier Superhero To The Rescue

Mileage expert Gary Leff of View From The Wing just launched a new site, Book Your Award, that is the answer to many a Conde Nast Traveler reader's prayers. For a fee, he will use strategies that you might not have thought of -- such as flying on alternate routes or on partner airlines -- to get you where you're going for as few miles as possible.
Here at The Perrin Post we get so many questions about vacation rentals--everything from apartments in Rome to beach houses in Hawaii to estancias in Argentina--that we decided to create a new blog dedicated to the topic. Check out It Takes A Villa
If neither my print column on "How to Tweet Your Way to Amazing Travel Deals" nor my blog entry about Marriott Resorts' month-long October Trick-or-Tweet promotion convinced you of the travel perks you can glean from joining Twitter, perhaps this will: Air New Zealand is giving away 30 free flights to New Zealand on Twitter -- one each day over a 30-day period.

Finding the Right South American Cruise

"We are looking at a South America cruise in November or over the Christmas/New Year holiday. Both Silversea and Holland America have Santiago to Buenos Aires or Rio options that look enticing (although Holland is more in our budget). Who do I call for help making a decision and booking?!?"
Wondering which countries, cities, and resort destinations will yield the most value for your dollar this winter? They're listed in my Perrin Report column in Condé Nast Traveler' s November issue and include Jackson Hole, Whistler, Las Vegas, Chile, Los Cabos, and much more. Check it out if you're brainstorming winter vacation ideas
As a special for any Condé Nast Traveler and Perrin Post readers, we are happy to offer a 15% discount on stays of a week or more in Paris at any of our PerfectlyParis apartments for November.
A reader named Terratiger is wondering which cruise line, ship, itinerary, and cabin she should choose for a Mediterranean cruise. Since a lot of savvy cruisegoers read this blog, I'd love to hear your suggestions for her.
Have you joined Jetsetter yet? It's the new invitation-only site for flash sales from high-end hotels, resorts, and cruise lines. Three of today's Jetsetter deals were curated by Condé Nast Traveler.
Having trouble finding the right travel agent for a family trip to Barcelona in fall 2010, and I'm hoping you can point me in the right direction. We are looking to spend around 6 nights in Barcelona.
"We're going to NYC 12/15 thru 12/21," writes John B. Brams. "Any tips on where to stay less expensively than the usual hotels? Thanks much."
"Do you have any recommendations of travel specialists for special needs (wheelchair) travel?" asks reader Gary.

Where to Travel in November

Have you read my November-issue Perrin Report yet? It includes a number of winter vacation ideas that are easy on the wallet. Lately we've been seeing some pretty good airfares to Chile and Argentina from a number of U.S. cities. And, of course, there are some spectacular resort deals in Mexico, as well as off-peak prices in the Caribbean.
What are the cheapest days of the week to fly to the Caribbean? I've found that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are often cheapest.
Virgin America uses Facebook for developing "brand zealots," whereas Twitter is more for "conflict resolution" -- which often occurs in real time, thanks to Virgin's onboard Wi-Fi. Facebook delivers the bigger return on investment when it comes to "longterm engagement," although Twitter can deliver bursts of "short-term intense buzz."
I'm moderating a panel of travel-industry leaders at a Conde Nast Traveler conference. The panelists: Virgin America's CEO, David Cush; Pamela Conover, CEO of Seabourn Cruise Line; Victoria Treyger, Travelocity's Chief Marketing Officer; and Mariano Proano Salvador, the Vice Minister of Tourism for Ecuador.
On a 2 1/2-hour domestic flight this past weekend, I had my choice of 335 movies. And I could start, pause, rewind, or fast-forward them whenever I wanted. This wasn't just dumb luck. I picked the right plane.
The moment I boarded my Continental flight from Newark to Houston on Thursday, panic set in: I couldn't find my iPhone...

Which Perrin Post Do You Prefer?

There are now two Perrin Post blogs--the original one on Concierge.com and the new one on Truth.Travel. Wondering which you should be reading? Here are the basic differences.
"Do you have any recommendations for great places to find business and first-class airfare sales?" Sure I do.
Do you have any advice on great places to go and fabulous deals at the end of October? I am looking for something truly spectacular for about 9 days total (including travel from California).
"We're planning our first European river cruise. The itinerary offered by AMAWaterways for Amsterdam to Basel is the most attractive, but AMAWaterways doesn't seem as well known as, say, Uniworld or Viking River Cruises. How would you rate them? Should we go with the better named with known reputations?"

Sale on Seabourn Cruises

Get a load of the Seabourn sale over at Jetsetter. I haven't done the math to determine just what sort of a deal this represents, but on the face of it the savings look pretty good to me. The itineraries on offer are for Belize, Panama, and Costa Rica (starting at $270/night), the Caribbean (starting at $299/night), and Asia (starting at $329/night).
